Online course on Quality Engineering and Management runs successfully for the 2nd time

TUM School of Management has successfully offered a MOOC online course on Quality Engineering and Management for the 2nd time since 2015. The course follows the fundamental lines of Six Sigma, the statistical management system for process improvement, and its contents corresponds essentially to those of the regular on-site TUM class “Quality Engineering and Management”. Developed by Professor Dr. Holly Ott, Senior lecturer of the Chair Production and Supply Chain Management of TUM School of Management, and carried out by her together with Professor Dr. Martin Grunow, Head of this same Chair and Six-Sigma Master Black Belt, the course aims to enable their students to immediately understand and apply quality concepts in their work as well as research, effectively starting and driving Six-Sigma projects.

MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) is a platform for free online courses offered by Universities and entities worldwide, amongst which TUM School of Management is to be found. Through this educative online innovation the online course “Fundamentals of Six Sigma: Quality Engineering and Management” has not only come to life, but also been accessed by students of 178 different countries, being USA, India, Brazil, Germany and Mexico on the top 5 countries. In this year’s course alone there were over 23,000 enrollments (7,000 more than last year’s numbers), from which over 3% also chose to participate in the verified course track for a certificate, available by Week 7 of the course.

During the course itself, the participants are taught the most important quality methods and techniques, including sampling, statistical process control, process capability, regression analysis, and design of experiments. Quality management is examined through interactive, guided projects and case studies. As a finalization, a presentation of a full Six-Sigma project is given. Its participants, who highly appraise this online educative platform, seem to be more than satisfied not only with its contents, but also with its methodology and organization.

In addition, in 2016, the TUM School of Management Executive Education Center in partnership with the MOOC Course will offer a full Six-Sigma Green Belt Certification, which combines online coaching with Master Black Belt, Dr. Reiner Hutwelker, and an intensive face-to-face training in Munich.
