TUM and SAP sign R&D partnership with plans for new building in Garching

Top European location for data and information technologies

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and SAP SE have signed a long-term research partnership at the Garching campus with the shared aim of driving digitization and the resulting technological revolution. The agreement – Germany’s biggest R&D partnership to date between business and academia – focuses on the topics of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and how they can be applied securely.

Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE for SAP Product Engineering, welcomed the new partnership: “By working shoulder to shoulder with TUM, we are building an important bridge between science and industry. TUM carries out world-class research and has an outstanding reputation in computer science and business informatics. We are therefore looking forward to taking our cooperation with TUM to the next level. This will create added value for both partners. It will also strengthen Munich as a location and create new opportunities for talented individuals.”

As part of the “Industry on Campus” strategy, TUM and SAP’s joint R&D activities will be brought together under a single roof, encouraging synergies. The plan is to construct a new building on the Garching campus over the coming few years, with space for well over 700 SAP and TUM staff members. Professor Thomas F. Hofmann, President of TUM: “The new partnership brings together outstanding competencies from business and academia in a unique fashion. Together, we can spearhead digitization and the resulting technological revolution, at the same time helping Bavaria implement its high-tech agenda. This is the first initiative within our “Industry on Campus” strategy and the biggest milestone to date in our TUM AGENDA 2030 under Germany’s Excellence Strategy.”
