TUM grants 790 Deutschlandstipendium scholarships
150 years after it was founded, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is presenting more scholarships under the Deutschlandstipendium program than ever before: 790 young talents will receive funding under the national program, which was established by the German federal government in 2011. “The scholarship is intended to encourage the best people to look beyond the horizons of their specialized fields and serve as role models for all 42,000 students,” said TUM President Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann at the annual meeting in Garching.
The Deutschlandstipendium comes with 3,600 euros in annual funding, with half provided by private and institutional sponsors and half by the federal government. In 2019, a total of 2.844 million euros will be provided to the selected students at TUM, most of them undergraduates. Around 50 percent of the recipients are women. A total of 1.422 million euros will be provided by the sponsors.
The sponsors’ contributions are a requirement for winning the federal funding. “We are even more grateful to all of those who make financial contributions to this program and, in addition, donate their time as mentors,” said Prof. Herrmann. He added that the Deutschlandstipendium reflects a commitment to civil society with positive feedback effects for the young generation. This is highlighted by the fact that former recipients are among today’s sponsors.
The scholarships are distributed across the entire university. The Department of Informatics has the largest number of recipients, followed by the TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan. The largest sponsors at present are BayWa, the Bavarian Industry Association (vbw) (150 scholarships in total), TUM’s Karl Max von Bauernfeind Association (50) and, as a private sponsor, Dr. Farhad Farassat (33).
The TUM Management Alumni e.V. awards German scholarships to outstanding students for the 3rd time. Originally three scholarships have now turned into five. In addition to the usual services, the TUM Management Alumni e.V. also offers a mentoring program of our association’s board members, who support the scholarship holders with their practical knowledge from the business world. The scholarship does not only focus on performance, but also on whether someone is volunteering, for example.
