TUM “M Cube” consortium in the final round of the BMBF Future Cluster Initiative
What does the future of mobility look like in metropolitan areas? In the “M Cube” innovation cluster, the Technical University of Munich is investigating this question together with stakeholders from science, business and society. The research consortium has now successfully completed the first round of the Future Cluster Initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF).
“For TUM, the Future Cluster Initiative is an opportunity to combine its diverse research in the field of mobility, focusing on issues of social responsibility,” notes Sebastian Pfotenhauer, professor of Innovation Research at the TUM School of Management and the Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS). Together with colleagues Markus Lienkamp (professor of automotive engineering) and Gebhard Wulfhorst (professor of demographic structure and traffic management), he oversees the interdisciplinary and cross-faculty project.
“M Cube: Munich Cluster for the Future of Mobility in Metropolitan Areas” represents an interdisciplinary approach to research that unites the competencies of three focal areas: autonomous, shared and electric driving, networking multimodal mobility and integrated traffic development at district and regional levels. The project’s strategic goals are in line with economic, social and ecological sustainability and thus address specific challenges for society. Hence, project leads are working closely with partners such as BMW, the Deutsche Bahn and the state capital of Munich.
The TUM is one of 16 institutions selected from 137 competition designs submitted for the first round of the Future Cluster Initiative. The M Cube consortium is now faced with preparing a full proposal for October. The BMBF is providing funding for successful clusters with 250,000 euros initially for the design phase and then up to 45 million euros over the course of nine years to implement the cluster initiative.
