WARR Hyperloop Team wins the 2018 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition

SpaceX founder Elon Musk launched the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition in 2015. The Hyperloop is the concept of a high-speed train designed to travel at near-sound velocity in a partial-vacuum tube. Student teams from around the world are called upon to create concepts for the so-called pod, the cabin capsule in which passengers are to be transported through the tube. The WARR Hyperloop team of the Technical University of Munich has already won the competition twice. Yesterday the team was announced the winner of the 2018 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition in Los Angeles. On June 14, they unveiled their newest pod prototype, which managed to go almost 50 percent faster than last year, reaching a final speed of 467 km/h (290 mph) in the contest.

20 teams with nearly 600 participants of the whole world were registered for the competition. Only those teams were allowed to actually take part in the competition, whose capsules managed to pass the so called test week, in which SpaceX-engineers examined the prototypes closely. The WARR Hyperloop teams also won one of the three innovation awards, which were given out for their magnet-leviation-pod in a side contest. The aim of the contest was to create a capsule that passes more than 25 meters contactlessly.

WARR Hyperloop is a student initiative from the TUM. It was founded in 2015 in response to SpaceX’s call for pod prototypes and is part of the organization WARR e.V. , which is mainly working on space related projects such as rockets, satellites and space elevators.
